Office building on Pere IV, Barcelona

Walls are not just walls in Poblenou. They tell us the story of an industrial neighbourhood that is part of the history of Barcelona. The office building on carrer Pere IV is established as a bridge between the historic neighbourhood and the city’s future technological and innovation district.

The 22@ district of Poblenou is Barcelona’s new hive for innovation, technology and research. An urban area in continuous development, which, in for the 19th century and much of the 20th century housed the industrial activity of the city.

Where the Pere IV and Pamplona streets meet, is the location of this offices building which is integrated into the urban fabric, configuring the corner of the island through a tiered volume which generates multiple terrace spaces. This graduation forms the transition between the different heights of the adjacent buildings, improving integration into the built environment.

The facade of the building is inspired by the Catalan tradition of ceramics applied to architecture through vertical slats. This design gives a unique and differential personality generating a great link with the industrial tradition of the Poblenou neighbourhood and providing a technological solution that guarantees high energy efficiency.

The double and triple height interior spaces bring a great spatial richness to the building, allowing a greater entry of natural light and generating visual relationships between different levels to foster interconnection between users.

Biophilia appears both on the terraces (in homage to the large trees of carrer Pamplona) and in the interior, where it boosts users’ well-being and mood.

The project has been designed with the objective of obtaining a LEED Gold certification, therefore becoming one of the most sustainable buildings within Plan 22@.
The criteria for energy consumption savings have focused on limiting demand through careful design of the enclosure and minimising energy consumption with highly efficient systems such as the connection to the district network. Thanks to these resources, a global energy saving of 26% has been calculated. Along with this, a reduction in water resources and the promotion of the use of sustainable transport have been factored in.
