Sustainable housing development in Montornés. Barcelona

Elastiko Architects designs this development of 27 homes located in Montornés del Vallés, a town situated 30 minutes from Barcelona. Given the depth of the site the programme is organised into a single block with a large central courtyard that provides optimum natural light and cross ventilation for all the units. This courtyard as well as accommodating the nucleus of vertical circulation and access to the housing units also provides a climatic ‘buffer’, generating heat for the homes during the winter and cooling during the summer.

A large atrium was proposed for the centre of the block as a bioclimatic strategy to automatically thermally control the entire building. In this way the atrium will be open in the summer dissipating heat through its system of cross ventilation produced by the chimney effect. Meanwhile during winter months the atrium acts as a solar gain heat reservoir thanks to the greenhouse effect and incorporates warm air exchanges with all of the residential units. Thanks to this strategy the demand for electrical consumption for heating and cooling is reduced, resulting in both greater energy and economic savings. The residential units of different sizes and programmes are organised around the atrium, all are provided with an external balcony.
An installation of photovoltaic solar panels has also been included with the aim of eventually making the building completely self sufficient for its energy needs.

The facades are all composed of red brick with the interior facades providing a contrast with their use of white brick. This approach allows for an increased solar heat gain in winter. For the external facades special attention is given to the ground floor treatment with a brick of light relief that provides a texture and material continuity as well as suggesting a plinth idea around the building.

The materials and systems used in the construction were chosen based on their reduced environmental impact criteria, strictly scrutinised to comply with budgetary controls.

The housing block is bounded by Av. 11 de Septiembre, the riverbed park at the rear of the site and the pedestrian pathway at the side which provides access to the building. Taking advantage of the difference in level across the site two levels of parking are included with access form the lower level. 

The front façade on Av. 11 de Septiembre also includes a commercial unit on the ground floor that opens onto the atrium borrowing the light available there.

The building’s roof includes an external open space for residents treated as an extension of the atrium space with planting and views over the nearby park occupying the riverbed and beyond.
