Refurbishment of an industrial building at c/Pere IV 86, Barcelona

Back in 2020 Elastiko was awarded the commission for the design of the interiors under the framework of refurbishing this industrial building of significant cultural importance. The client’s intention was to eliminate all the elements not belonging to the original structure in order to create an open plan layout where the work spaces would have a certain flexibility.

The 4 storey building was originally constructed in 1873 and is located right at the heart of Poblenou, within the 22@ district of Barcelona. Over its lifetime the building had grown with the addition of different extensions to the original according to the production necessities of the time, presenting a mix of building solutions and construction systems characteristic of their time.

The idea is to take advantage of the old entrance through the deliveries courtyard by lengthening it and generating a planted space with greenery forming a new building spine and drawing natural light into all the floors. The reception is positioned alongside this courtyard on the ground floor together with the waiting area and a large communal area with a dining facility, all of which promote social interaction and encounter.

The latent potential of the second and third floors with their double height spaces and large exposed wooden trusses supporting the ceilings is to be maximised. These double height interior spaces provide a spatial richness within the work areas allowing for more natural light and generating visual connections between the different floors which helps foment interaction between the occupants. The project includes the conservation of the massive trusses running the length of the building’s top floor restoring their original wood colour.

The new materials introduced seek to achieve a coherence with the building’s industrial style with furniture and planting will help generate a stimulating experience for users, with the primary objective of creating comfortable wok spaces.

The building has been designed to qualify for the LEED Gold sustainability certification with the inclusion of good practice in energy savings, consumption of resources, internal comfort and use of sustainable materials.
