Cloudworks Torre Colón, Barcelona

The Torre Colón was the first skyscraper built in Barcelona and the first building to exceed 100 m in height in the city (1969). It is a building with a strong Brutalist influence built in reinforced concrete. On the 15th floor, Elastiko proposes a workspace that is inspired by the city-sea relationship, making the most of its location and the 360-degree views that the building provides.

The main concept of the project arises from the creation of a single open space that revolves around the core of the building, generating views over the city, which in turn leads to quieter areas for concentrated work or rest.

The client wanted a very flexible, innovative and agile work environment that would replace the traditional static office, but one with warm finishes that was linked to the sea. To achieve this, Elastiko worked along several lines: Blue was introduced in the ceilings and kitchen, enhancing the building’s relationship with the sea. In the same way, natural oak wood was introduced in the cores to bring warmth to the space, achieving a more welcoming environment for customers. Finally, a continuous ledge was designed along the façade of the building, allowing coworkers and visitors to take advantage of the 360º views over the city of Barcelona and the sea.

The central core of the tower: with the characteristic reinforced concrete structure, typical of these buildings (it houses elevators, evacuation stairs and bathrooms), it is used inside to create a double wooden wall that houses the phone booth and nap room for informal calls, as well as the facilities and warehouses. The programme is completed by the kitchen-dining room, social area and the two multipurpose meeting rooms that can be converted into a game room with a ping-pong table.

The well-being of the users and sustainability were of great importance when developing the project. The facilities were designed in continuous search of maximum comfort for coworkers, optimizing natural light at workstations and indoor air quality. In the same way, home automation technologies have been incorporated to control energy consumption.

The Torre Colón was the first skyscraper built in Barcelona and the first building to exceed 100 m in height in the city (1969). It is a building with a strong Brutalist influence built in reinforced concrete that draws attention for its slightly twisted façade thanks to the small twist made by each floor.
